In measuring your film for estimating cost, use the following guidelines:
|
8mm |
approx |
800-900 ft |
1 hour |
|
16mm |
approx |
1600-1800 ft |
1 hour |
Small reel of 8mm film (little Kodak box or round plastic 3" reel) = 50 feet of film
5" diameter reel = 200 feet of film
6" diameter reel = 300 feet of film
7" diameter reel = 400 feet of film
Larger reels, which have had film spliced together may not be full. In some cases you can find notches along the reel spokes indicating how much film the reel contains.
A VHS tape will hold approximately 1800 feet of 8mm or 3600 feet of 16mm film.
How many reels of home movies will fit on each standard two-hour videotape? This depends on the film speed (measured in frames per second) and the format. A good guide is that a standard two-hour videotape will hold:
28-36 50-foot reels of 8mm film
32-40 50-foot reels of Super 8mm film
28-36 100-foot reels of 16mm film
